## Finite Element Method

The finite element method (FEM) is a numerical technique for finding approximate solutions to boundary value problems for partial differential equations. It uses subdivision of a whole problem domain into simpler parts, called finite elements, and variational methods from the calculus of variations to solve the problem by minimizing an associated error function. Analogous to the idea that connecting many tiny straight lines can approximate a larger circle, FEM encompasses methods for connecting many simple element equations over many small subdomains, named finite elements, to approximate a more complex equation over a larger domain. ### FEM flange analysis

In addition to conventional analytic calculation tools we take advantage of the Finite Element Method for the analysis of flange systems. We are a licensee of ANSYS Mechanical.

Our flangeValid System Designer 3D allows us to export an entire flange system or single elements in 3D geometry formats like IGES which can then be imported into ANSYS to be meshed and supplied with the appropriate boundary conditions and finally be analysed. The Finite Element Method helps us to analyse the behaviour of flange systems in different load cases like design, montage, operation with external loads and start up more precisely than with conventional calculation tools.

The pictures illustrate the generated mesh, the temperature gradient in a flange system and the surface pressure on a gasket.
